Minding the shop

In my line of work, keeping track of the threads is half the battle. At work, we have (for now) three corporate sites, a sandbox, a development environment, and more. We have social media channels – some corporately-managed, many managed by external agencies in support of our campaigns – and an active stakeholder and media [...]

The pieces of the digital engagement puzzle

At the FCO, it’s Listen, Pubish, Engage, Evaluate. In the DIUS of Justin Kerr-Stevens, it was Educate, Enable, Engage, Promote. Now, having learned what I’ve learned over the last 18 months, I’ve twice this week found myself flashing up this slide at a conference to describe the elements of the digital engagement puzzle as I’m thinking [...]

State of social media & online PR in the UK

econsultancy and sponsors bigmouthmedia have just published their report on Social Media and Online PR based on a survey of around 1,100 agency and client-side digital folk. It’s an interesting report not least in presenting a picture that’s in line with other research I’m aware of, showing that social media adoption is still at a pretty [...]

Thanks Tim - two fantastic links there, which I'll forward to colleagues looking at this kind of thing too. There's clearly enormous potential in social media to support careers advice and guidance.

Ruby Pseudo's tips on engaging young people

One of the enduring sessions from the event in my mind was youth consultant Ruby Pseudo's talk on the reality of how young people use technology. In her own words, from her blog 'Ruby Pseudo Wants a Word':
Ruby Pseudo is a lucky girl who works with a network of young minds across the globe to find out what they want, wish for and need. It's also stuff they hate,

Us Now: a film about the power of mass collaboration, government and the internet

If you missed the screening of Ivo Gormley's film 'Us Now' (or want to watch it again), there are clips, rushes and transcripts available at: http://usnowfilm.com/ and a highlights clip on YouTube:

Lucy Willis on Channel 4's Battlefront project

Channel 4's Battlefront follows 20 young campaigners trying to save the world. There's Alexander, fighting knife and gun crime in his neighbourhood through education. There's James looking to cap university tuition fees. And there's Rachel campaigning against Size Zero attitudes and their effect on the body image of young people.

I caught up with Lucy Willis from Raw media, producers of Batlefront, over lunch and she told me about the series via… Continue

Engaging young people: learning from Channel 4

Young people are online, OK. But most don't respond to 'learning' tools online, and certainly not traditional government sites. Channel 4 have put their money where their mouth is and put their youth commissioning budget heavily (nearly exclusively?) into online. So what can we learn from their experience?

The event this morning kicked off with some really interesting presentations from Matt Locke (@matlock) and Adam Gee (… Continue
