Speech writing is in lots of ways similar writing a paper, apart from that there is no penalty for spelling and punctuation mistakes. You should not try to write words in your speech that you are not relaxed pronouncing or don't know the meaning of because it can lead to a less fluently delivered speech.
To be able to write a high-quality speech is a lot like making a good cake. Having the right elements is key for it's success. Every… Continue

I was struck today by something a friend said to me today about finding the idea of posting on a social network intimidating. I realised that it is a rather intimidating thing to do, to write a blog, comment on a post or even tweet for the first time.
I suppose that joining any kind of online community/social network isn’t altogether different from joining an adult education class or enrolling at a college or university. Many people find this really intimidating, particularly if they have had a… Continue

Coming from a very poor area where there is about a 70% unemployment rate, the first contact that the adults have with learning after they have left school is with the local children's centre or the primary school.
All schools must examine how they are working with parents in light of the recent government announcement that by September 2010 all primary, and September 2012 all secondary, schools will be required to offer parents real-tim… Continue

After our series of training and consultation events with college students, I am now working on the footage and data collection from the raw materials. One initial and common response from students, when we asked them how they used technology for college work, was to “research with tools such as Google and Wikipedia”. While this is understandable and most of us do that to quickly retrieve information, is it good enough for more serious academic pursuit?
A student from Ireland conducted an “expe… Continue

Futurelab’s Greater Expectations project has set up an online survey for 14-19 year olds and I'm hoping you can help me distribute it!
Greater Expectations is a 3-year project I'm working on that will create an online resource that supports young people to explore their aspirations and entitlements and engage with the information, networks and tools that can help put these into practicethat will help development of the project’s online resource. The online resource aims to connect young people’… Continue

During the last two weeks, we have organised four training and consultation events in London, Nottingham, Bristol and Leeds, which aimed to better understand students' view and experience of technology inside and outside colleges. 73 students have joined us from different parts of the country, and here are some interesting highlights from our discussion and activities:
- Social networking sites, particularly Facebook, are popular among students and for students' unions' communication.
- Despite… Continue
Learning and development staff within businesses (employers) today are finding that a catalogue of courses no longer addresses the fast changing needs of their organisation. As a result, many have been experimenting with different approaches, enabled by technology, to identify new types of learning and performance solutions that keep their organisations agile and responsive to change. In a demand led system of FE & Skills, can we afford to wait until 2020 before we see the changes outlined i… Continue
Having just become an avid user of Twitter and just attended the National Digital Inclusion Conference, I have been reflecting on the revolution currently taking place around new media and its impact on learning.
Here are some observations.
Look at what's happened to the music industry
The proliferation in filesharing and music downloading has turned the music industry on its head. Younger people are less and less likely to pay for music, havi… Continue
I have been reading Becta’s ‘Harnessing Technology Delivery Plan’ which makes for interesting reading after some of the issues stirred up at #ATN09
In this fast-paced world, 2005 seems a veerry long time ago but the principles of what we are looking to achieve through better use of technology, social media and the internet remains broadly the same:
Transforming teaching & learning to help improve education outcomes.
Better supporting ‘hard to reach’ learners e.g. those with special n… Continue

One of the enduring sessions from the event in my mind was youth consultant Ruby Pseudo's talk on the reality of how young people use technology. In her own words, from her blog 'Ruby Pseudo Wants a Word':
Ruby Pseudo is a lucky girl who works with a network of young minds across the globe to find out what they want, wish for and need. It's also stuff they hate,
I really enjoyed Ruby Pseudo's presentation which I found very inspiring. I loved her answer to the question 'is age what it's all about with social networking?'. Her reply (if I've noted it down correctly) included the comment 'it's about having manners, and about helping people'. This theme of social etiquette on social networking sites interests me - how people organise themselves into communities online. The first example of this that I knew about was ebay which I think based its business mo… Continue

Some points I noted from Ivo's film ...
- Social networking re-establishes community
- Social media brings the gift economy into the open
- Social media facilitates connecting to one another through similarities; and trading on similarities
- 'Public services start with people and what they can bring'
- People are naturally collaborative and cooperative
- Social media enables us to co-innovate and co-create Continue

I really enjoyed the conference, so many interesting ideas. And it's all too important.
Duane Melius said he dropped out of school at 15 and approximately 25,000 young people have disappeared from full time education (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7906278.stm).
That's a terrifying number who just don't feel education has anything to offer them.
New technology has broken down so many barriers perhaps it will be the key to reinventing education so that 25,000 will go back to school. Mole… Continue

1. Steve Moore: Focus on the philosophy over technology and the now rather than the future.
2. Ruby Pseudo: Kids are connected & collecting; and that applies to everything.
3. Ruby Pseudo: For a generation that might appear to be vain, kids are surprisingly unconcerned with perfection. Scruffy round the edges is fine - they don't expect everything to be perfect first time round. It's a generation raised on 'updates'
4. Duane Mellius: The way we see excellence in young people needs to be r… Continue
